Who sharpens the knives in this house?
That was the question Scott asked. Oh, but nobody sharpens our knives. My mom complains, my son in law complains about dull knives. We just put up with it. Why? Well...growing up I didn't learn about sharpening knives. My husband didn't learn...he isn't the one who cooks...so this has never bothered him!! Monday night I was trying to slice a tomato and I truly demolished it. So I am thinking...I need a sharp knife. My girls think...mom needs a sharp knife. The solution is that we will need to get a new one.
Scott arrives on the scene. Master knife sharpener. Loves doing this. Out come my horribly dull knives...some I have used for 30 plus years---definitely dull!! Scott realizes that we have a problem...no whetstone for sharpening. Christianna remembered that she has a sharpening steel. So Scott starts the slow progress of taking 30 year old knives and making them sharp enough to slice my tomatoes -- THIN. One by one, he takes the knives and files off the dull edges to a sharp point.
Oh but he will not always be here so ....everyone must learn to sharpen them. So one by one he teaches us girls how to file off the dull edges and bring the knives back into use.
No longer dull and a stumbling block to all of us...but now a sharp useful tool. Filing takes practice. Sharpening takes time.

Unexpected
So as it was, Christianna and I were out taking care of some 'important business' on Tuesday afternoon. Lydia called about 6pm, with news from my husband that we would be having company for the evening. So my immediate thought: we were only having sandwiches and veggies for dinner but we had plenty...so it was fine. It was at that point I found out our visitor was not coming for dinner, but to spend the evening with us. After inquiring more into this unexpected visit, I discover that company was would be arriving around 8pm to spend the night!!! Two hours and I am not home. Oh! I still had a couple stops to make and I needed to pick up Steve from the office...I had the car!
We had just had company over the weekend-- was the room washed and put in order, was the bathroom cleaned? I was still in Keene, so my thoughts went to making sure the guest room was prepared. Lydia said that the room had been cleaned and prepared. Yes, they had already set out the guest supplies(clean towels, washcloths, etc), and yes the bathroom was cleaned. I wasn't home and able to take care of these items...but she had prepared enough for company in the past, that she didn't need my guidance on this...it was done and ready for guests. When I arrived home...all was in order!
Our unexpected special visitor was Dr. Scott Sardonicus originally from New Hampshire, but now from Ohio. Steve has known him nearly since we have been in New Hampshire--nearly 24 years. Scott, also a chiropractor, practiced across the state in Wolfeboro, but now lives in Ohio. My girls met him about 4 years ago when he came to our home one evening after Tabitha's accident. But that is really all we knew of Scott.
This morning after Steve went to the office, Scott took us on a field trip on our own land...learning about all the wild edible greens, the different kinds of mushrooms, the wild blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, grapes, the different types of trees, and a notice of the common and plenteous Poison Ivy!! He wasn't just pointing out the plants, but the medicinal properties of each. Scott re-sparked my interest in medicinal herbs--maybe I should say he fanned the little spark that was there. What a wonderful time we had! Unexpected!
So my morning was planned:

So my morning was planned:
- mowing the field
- weed whacking the east side of the house
- weeding the perennial bed
- putting down the rest of the mulch

Baby Feet
Great-grandma Hillis...this one's for you!!!
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalms 119:105
Keeping the homefires going...
while mom's away! I thank you, Lydia and Christianna for taking care of Dad and keeping everything running smoothly at home while the girls and I help Rebecca....thank you!
Now that's one handsome Grandpa!!
First it was the two of us. It didn't take long before it was the 3 of us..then 4,5,6,7,8,9, 10, and 11. Now, life has taken a change. There's only the 7 of us at home right now--but that I am sure will change!!!
Others have been added to our family circle, 3 son-in-laws, 3 grandchildren, soon - 1 daughter-in-law. Yes, there is more of us...so to speak.
But one day there will be just the two of us at home again. Gray headed, slower, but hopefully wiser...so that we will be able to encourage all the 'young men and ladies' that God has put into our lives -- our children and our children's children.
An amazing design. One generation helping the next generation. This is God's plan.
The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head. Proverbs 20:29

Stephen is 1 week old today.
He is just beginning life outside the womb. His parents have the big responsibility and privilege of teaching him God's way. Last night as Chris read the scriptures and we discussed them, Stephen and Abigail are sitting right there to hear the words their Daddy is saying... I thought about...
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. .2 Timothy 3:15

Stephen James Galla
The day has come that a son is born. His Mom and Dad named this little guy after the first 2 martyrs in the Bible. Stephen and James. This also happens to be Stephen's Grandpa's name and his Great-grandpa's name. We pray that this little man from God will grown into the names that are given him.
Now for the hair!!! I can't hardly believe the hair....so different from his big sister's!
Hers was darker that it is today, but not as much or as dark as this little guy. Looks like he already has a bit of a suntan, also.
He is about 12 hours old in these pictures.
I can hardly believe...a boy!

Trust and Obey
When we walk with the Lord, in the light of His Word
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Not a burden we bear; not a sorow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.
But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.
Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet.
Or we'll walk by His side in the way.
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
--John H. Sammis 1887
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. 1 John 2:3-6
